Installation OS X base on iAtkos v5i in VMWare

On my searching about OSX on virtualization, I find some interesting tutorial on pcwizxomputer.com. And base on that I manage sucessfully to install and running iAtkos v5i on VMWare Player 2.5.1 and VMWare Workstation 6.5.1.

Here is my stories :
My Host Machine is acer aspire 4920G with 2G rams, running Ubuntu 8.10 x86_64 with the latest upgrade.
Virtualization application that I used is VMWare Player 2.5.1.
(note: I found a windows software to configure VMware VMX configuration file and VMDK disk image, you can google it for key VMX Builder)

The VMware configuration is:
1. Virtual Disk should be IDE type, and minimal 8 GB.
2. OS type selection is "other" and the version is "FreeBSD64"
3. Ethernet mode is bridge (I tried NAT mode but I can't make it running) and make sure that the bridged ethernet on the host is the active link.
4. I use the iso disk images as the source of CD / DVD.

OSX Custom Install:
SMBIOS28, Kernel 9.2.0 TOH and Intel Ethernet driver

So you can power on the virtual machine.
On StartUp Boot Message press "F8", and boot prompt should come up.

If the virtual machine is working, you should see boot sequence some message on the screen.

finally the "welcome message screen for iAtkos v5i" should come up

iAkos v5i Welcome Message

select utilities->disk util, erase and setup the disk, I set single partition (just select erase tab and set the Volume name, and click "erase"
you will see the volumes and you can quit disk util.

click continue and select the destination volume, continue and than click "customize", select the customisation of this installation as state on the top.

customize

Custom Selection

and the click install

the installation progress should come up
Installation Progress

on my machine it's take about 30 minutes, and the machine should restart automaticaly on the end of installation.
after restarted if you press "F8" on the boot up message you will see

Start Up Boot Message

if you set "-v -f" you will see some boot up sequence, and this is good to see if some thing wrong happen.

Start Up Boot Sequece

if not you wll see

Start Up Boot Sequece

after a while on my machine it's about 10 minutes (but next boot up sequence is only take 3 minutes), if there is no error, the "Welcome Message Screen" is up

Welcome Message

and you can start with customisation of your OSX ..... and the end your Desktop will come up.

If you have Ethernet connected to internet you can start the Ethernet assistant to setup the ethernet automatically.
(Your LAN/WLAN on the host machine should connected to dhcp server).

Destop with ethernet preference

Desktop

DONE!!!

Hi, found this link and your vmware experience on insanemac. I was curious though, how is the performance of installing the iatkos 5i through vmware? I have downloaded and tried the pcwiz actual vmware installation/image and it was pretty much unuseable.

If this can perform like a nornal osx86 install.. I would be extremely excited to try this... please do let me know!

the response is litle bit slow but still acceptable for me (on my test machine acer aspire 4920G with 2G rams, with Ubuntu 8.10 x86_64), but need to test for more application (I only test the internet browsing). And of course display, there is no support on vmware.
The start up time is almost the same with the iAtkos installed on my test machine. The Sound card is detected but it's useless.

Please Help at the earliest....

please try with the -v -f options on the bootloader prompt. (by pressing "F8" key on bootloader message, see pic. 3) and you can see the boot prosess, and can trace it.

I'm currently single-booting Ubuntu 8.04 ("Hardy Heron") 64-bit on my 15" MacBook Pro C2D, version 3,1 "Santa Rosa." Thought it might be fun to get the Mac OS running as a guest under Linux. So, I've tried installing Leopard (from the retail copy which I own) as a virtual machine in both VirtualBox and qemu -- neither worked. Tried the same using the DVD I found on the train, labeled "KALYWAY Leo 10.5.1 OSx86," which only got me as far as the grey screen with Apple logo (no animated spinner or progress bar), which will hang indefinitely.

Hoping to find a copy of iAtkos 5i on my way home tonight, and wondering if this would even produce different results. I still intend to make this work using VirtualBox or qemu; dual-booting is the obvious solution for someone who wants the option, but that's not what I am trying to do here.

As much as I've searched for a solution, my situation seems to be unique in that I'm installing the Mac OS as a GUEST OS on Apple hardware with a Linux base.

Ideas?

@TopoX: you can find the amd version of iatkos, i think the latest version is iAtkos v4a (a is for AMD version) ...

@xndr: the key for running OS-X on virtual machine (vmware) is Kernel, I can run the kernel 9.2.0 TOH version (this is available on the iatkos v5i, and the SMBIOS: i use the SMBIOS28.
I have tried also on the virtualbox but no success ... (I will try again on the latest release virtual box later ...)

using your vmx file, i tried installing iatkos 5i in vmware player, but the most i got to was the background with the spinning rainbow thing. The host is windows vista with 2gb of ram, and the intel Q6600 quad core. anyway to get installed???

i am not sure what step is your error,
but here is my suggesstion, please press "f8" on the boot-up message and then put "-v -f" on the boot prompt, so you will see the booting process and you will see on what state is your error.

Ik get the dreaded *** Virtual machine kernel stack fault (hardware reset) *** error. Tried setting the guest os to Win NT, as mentioned at other sites, to no avail. Any ideas?

Comment from: admin [Member] Email
@TopoX:
I have no error experience like that, may me be you can check the vmware setting and compare it with my vmware setting :
@ap: it's ussualy related with vmware setting, so please check with my setting:
and on the processor setting tab, you can expereiment with the "execution mode" setting.

Thanks for the instructions!

Same error *** Virtual machine kernel stack fault (hardware reset) ***

My Vmware Workstation 6.5.1 build-126130 is configured as yours.

The host OS is Ubuntu Jaunty, with legacy nvidia drivers, on a ASUS G70 laptop.

Before considering my previous comment, I've:
i) forgot the "customization" step (ie selecting SMBIOS28, Kernel 9.2.0 TOH and Intel Ethernet driver)
ii) In http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/Vmware_how_to they RECOMMEND to set Windows NT if installing in a Core 2 Duo.
I'm installing it again and I'll tell about the success... or not!

on my machine, it's also Core 2 duo (T7300) it's working well with the "FreeBSD64".

Success! Success! Success!
Changing from FreeBSD 64 to Windows NT solved my kernel stack fault.
Afterwards, I couldn't finished the installation because "there is no keyboard connected to your computer".
After 5 or 6 times, I finally managed to install iAtkos.
I don't know exactly the right “customization”, but I succeeded with:
Kernel ToH
Marvel Ethernet
SMBIOS 28
PS/2
Chameleon
and disabling everything with EFI (PC EFI, SMBIOS EFI, …)
I can sleep now, as my Ubuntu can run OS X.

Thanks admin!

Well, I got it working, except for mouse input. One problem I encountered along the way was that osx didn't recognize a keyboard. I fixed it with a suggestion on another board:

"Use x86 ACPI instead of STOCK ACPI Modified, dont select PS/2"

However, mouse input isn't working yet. The mouse pointer just sticks to the four corners of the screen, I can't move it freely.

Any suggestions?

Thanks all!

I have same problem before, and I use Stock Acpi modified + PS/2 Fix (as on the "customisation" screen capture above) and it's working on my installation.

ap@ I have tested the vm, and found out that the mouse and keyboard is not working, but if I click the vm (set mouse in site the vm ) on start up phase, the problem is disapear ..

I can install iAtkos 5i on vmware server 2.0 now.
During the customization, I selected.

SMBIOS28,
Kernel 9.2.0 TOH
ACPI X86
Intel Ethernet driver

##no PS/2 driver selected

But I have ethernet connection problem. . . . The iAtkos system always tell me the ethernet status is : Cable Unplugged.. . . . . . How can I connect the system to network ?

##I selected bridge mode on vmware.

hi! your guide was very good! but when i used the stock ACPI modified it did not recongize my usb mouse and keyboard... had to use x86 ACPI hope this helps someone else!

Comment from: admin [Member] Email
@jacky : yap, same on me the ethernet status will be "Cable Unplugged" but if your lan, there is dhcp server you can use the "Assistant" menu to get an IP address and start surfing.

@GriffiN : thank's with your info ... and for someone with usb mouse & keyboard can use the Griffin recommendation.

Managed to install iatkos 5i on vmware 6.5, using following:

- ostype: NT
- drive type: IDE
- custimised modules: SMBIOS28, kernel 9.2.0 TOH, ACPI x86 (otherwise usb keyboard not recognised), intel pro network driver (couldn't find just 'intel ethernet driver')
- after install I had to disconnect the install ISO from the virtual cddrive otherwise I would get a kernel panic

- after booting everything seems to work except that I can't move my (usb) mouse around (stuck to either one of the corners) and the system reports cable unplugged; tried admin's tip on the mouse, but that didn't work

Any tip on how to make the pointer respond to the mouse in an orderly fashion ?

Comment from: serwei [Visitor] Email
I used a USB mouse to solve the problem. Change VMWare settings to see All USB Devices, then plug in the mouse AFTER the OS starts. I end up with a trackpad that works on the PC and a USB mouse that works inside the Mac AT THE SAME TIME. Quite cool if you ask me lol.

I have install all of this on a toshiba. laptop and i got everything working except the built in webcam. I have iAtkos 7. When I installed it I had not chosen cardbus driver since when I did it would go thru all the install process then keep asking me if i want to shut down/log off etc. and kept popping that up. How do I get a better cardbus driver, how do I install it and is it what I need? also how do I protect my my working install so that if the driver is bad I can rollback?
